The Power of the Image: Making Images That Effect People
INSTRUCTORS: Richard Falco & Les Stone
How do we create photographs that affect others? As individuals, photography can give us a strong voice. It can serve as a means in which we generate awareness and chronicle our history. This workshop helps the student develop the skills and insights necessary to document those things that are important to them. Focus is placed on making strong visual images and developing a photographic essay.
Part I
The daylong session consists of keynote presentations by Richard Falco and Les Stone. The material has been drawn from assignments they have done around the world. The subjects range from photo essays related to news, social issues, conflicts & war, unique cultures and travel.
The presentations will be followed by a discussion of the images; the process of creating images that affect people; and using the camera as a personal voice. We will also discuss the business of journalism; the digital age and how technology is changing the way we work.
Part II
This section of the workshop will look at the changes and work with students to help them develop their own vision as they incorporate the new technology. The choice of equipment is just the next step in the photographic process. We will look at and talk about some of this equipment, as well as, replacing the conventional darkroom with a digital one. The darkroom will be in our computers.
Discussion: Tips on Equipment & Shooting
What’s in the camera bag
Why shooting digital can be a plus
Discussion: Storytelling
Pre visualization, Do you "see" the story beforehand, individual frames and or the entire story?
Visual ideas, what are they?
Drawing from your life experience, reading, painting, writing, films, trauma.
How do you see? Light, shadow, objects, mood, personalities, gestures, graphics, metaphor.
What are you trying to do? If photographs replace words, what do they "say?"
Discussion: Editing & Story Building
The importance & luxury of seeing the material quickly.
The Art of the Quick Edit and what it means to the next day’s shoot and final outcome of the project.
How technology works as an organizational tool for the entire project
utilizing this technology to your advantage while still in the field.
Why seeing the story as it unfolds, helps you make better photos as you continue to develop and explore your ideas.
Building your story as you to shoot it -- understanding why editing your images is as important as shooting them.
Part III This section will be a review of portfolios brought in by individuals attending the seminar & a small critique of their work. Students will be encouraged to create a portfolio that will help them to work within the field.

Eat, Shoot, Explore:
Travel to Southern Italy to a lovingly maintained 19th-century villa owned by Baronessa Cecilia Bellelli, who has transformed her home into a mecca for food-lovers and culture buffs. This is a trip that marries a love of food with a passion for photography- and all things Italian.
Here, just a few miles from the blue Mediterranean and the famous Greeks ruins of Paestum, guests will not only indulge in superb food, but also learn how deeply it is rooted to the culture. Preparing, eating and photographing dishes are part of the visual diary.
